Chris Thorburn was born June 3, 1983 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. The second round, 50th overall selection of the Buffalo Sabres in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, Thorburn is a graduate of the Canadian Hockey League.

A hard-working forward, Thorburn played parts of four seasons with North Bay/Saginaw of the OHL before finishing his junior career in Plymouth. In four seasons of junior hockey, Thorburn registered 203 points (79-124-203) before making his professional debut with Buffalo's AHL affiliate in Rochester in 2003-04. Over the course of the next two seasons, Thorburn continued to hone his skills in the AHL before making his NHL debut in 2005-06.

In October of 2006, Thornburn was placed on waivers by the Sabres and claimed shortly after by the Pittsburgh Penguins. After appearing in thirty-nine games with the Penguins, Thorburn was dealt by the club to the Atlanta Thrashers.
